Family of the late Jimmy Beaumont gathered at Renziehausen Park on Sunday to unveil a new street sign erected in honor of the late lead singer of The Skyliners.

Beaumont's grandchildren had the honor of revealing the sign on stage at the Lions Bandshell before a concert by the remaining members of the vocal group.

Beaumont, who was born in Pittsburgh but lived in McKeesport's Myer Park neighborhood for nearly 50 years, died in 2017 at the age of 76.

"We truly don't take it for granted that we had a star here in the City of McKeesport," Mayor Michael Cherepko said, "and without question as proud as Jimmy was to be a McKeesport resident, as a city, we were every bit as proud to have him here."

With less than a month to go until McKeesport's International Village, we're getting ready for our annual video broadcast of events, live from Renziehausen Park.

We would like to raise $1,250. Donations may be tax-deductible as allowed by law. All donors will be acknowledged on our website, in a sign on our booth at International Village, and during the broadcasts.

For the first time, you can now contribute online, securely, using our GoFundMe page. All donations will be tracked and managed by GoFundMe's charitable organization team.

We have already spent $458 to purchase badly needed new equipment.

For $135, we will make a minimum of one 30-second announcement every hour during the broadcast for your group, business or organization, plus we will run an ad on Tube City Online for at least 30 days.

For $250, we will make a minimum of one 60-second announcement every hour to promote your group, business or organization, plus we will run an ad on Tube City Online for at least 60 days.

We'll also promote your group, business or organization on Twitter and Facebook.

Any excess funds raised will go to support Tube City Almanac, the free Tube City Almanac obituaries, Internet radio WMCK.FM and the International Village website, which we maintain at no cost to city taxpayers.

Thank you so much for your support!

July 12, 2019 |

By Jason Togyer | Posted in: Announcements

Chase Clements of Pittsburgh takes a break recently along the Great Allegheny Passage bike trail in Downtown McKeesport with his latest creation, a bicycle with a special compartment for his dog, Sonny.

Built about two months ago, Clements said it's the 10th such bike that he's constructed from spare parts.

Clements and a friend, Leia Tomer, were out for a ride on the trail when rain forced them to pause near the War Memorial at the end of Market Street.

Exhibit Uses Woodland Hills' Experience to Examine U.S. School Segregation

June 28, 2019 |

By Staff Reports | Posted in: Announcements, Podcast

It's been 65 years since the Supreme Court's Brown vs. Board of Education decision that forbid public schools from being segregated along racial lines.

Yet according to several national studies, U.S. schools are now more racially segregated now than at any time since the 1980s.

Last week on "Two Rivers, 30 Minutes," we talked to Katie Fuller, one of the curators of an exhibit currently at the August Wilson African American Cultural Center, now through July 21. "Race and Revolution: Still Separate, Still Unequal" looks at school segregation in the northeastern United States --- including in the Mon Valley at Woodland Hills School District.

You can listen here.

"Two Rivers, 30 Minutes" airs Sundays at 8 a.m. on WEDO (810), 9:30 a.m. on The Pittsburgh Jazz Channel & WZUM (101.1/1550), 3 p.m. on WMCK.FM Internet radio, and as a free podcast whenever you like from our website at almanac.tubecityonline.com/podcast.
