Allegheny County will provide an additional $250,000 in Community Development Block Grant funding to the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, officials announced Thursday.
The one-time funding will make items such as fresh meat, fish and dairy products available to food pantry clients --- items that are not usually purchased for distribution due to their cost, a spokeswoman said.
Lisa Scales, president and CEO of the Duquesne-based charity, was joined by state Rep. Austin Davis, Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald and state Sen. Jim Brewster for the announcement.
CDBG funds are administered to counties through the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development.
“This is the kind of thing the CDBG program is intended to do --- help improve the quality of life and economic prospects of economically distressed households and neighborhoods in Allegheny County and across the country,” U.S. Rep. Mike Doyle said in a prepared statement.

A spring craft show will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at White Oak Volunteer Fire Co. No. 1, 1130 California Ave., a spokeswoman said.
More than 50 vendors are scheduled to participate, including dealers for Tupperware, Lularoe, Thirty-One, Pampered Chef, Tastefully Simple, Younique and many other companies.
Other vendors scheduled to participate include MB Letters, Creative Creations by Carol B., Kara's 100 Percent Soy Candles and Melts, Jordan Grace Co., Whaley's Wood Working, Cold Nose Bakery and The Chosen Wand.

White Oak American Legion Post 701 will hold oldies dances from 7 to 11 p.m. April 7 and 21, a spokesman said.
Admission is $5 and music from the 1950s and '60s will be provided by DJs Candy and Mike.

Penn State University's director of ethics and compliance is retiring June 30 --- but he's the one providing a retirement gift.
Regis Becker, a 1978 Penn State graduate, and his wife, Barbara, have made a $30,000 committment toward a new scholarship at the university's Greater Allegheny Campus in McKeesport.
The donation was announced by the university on Friday.
"When Barbara and I talked about what was important to us, she was the one who suggested the McKeesport campus," Becker said in a prepared statement. "She said, 'I really think we should try to do something for that campus, because they were so important in your career and your formation."

Mon-Yough area fire and ambulance companies will receive nearly $400,000 in state grants through Pennsylvania's Fire Company and Volunteer Ambulance Service Grant Program, administered by the Office of the State Fire Commissioner.
In addition to funding equipment and training, the money can be used for repairing, building or renovating facilities and for repaying debt related to equipment purchases or facility building and maintenance, a spokeswoman said.
“These grants will provide crucial funding to ensure that our local firefighters and EMS workers have what they need to carry out their life-saving work,” said state Rep. Austin Davis, who represents the 35th District. More than $160,000 is being awarded to 13 fire and ambulance companies in his district.
The funding will provide for equipment, training and other resources that are so important to their safety and the safety of our community, Davis said.

Residents of communities that are in the path of the Mon-Fayette Expressway are being encouraged to attend one of three information sessions where the plans will be displayed.
Renee Vid Colborn, spokeswoman for the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission, says the open houses will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. April 3, 4 and 5 at the Georgetown Centre, 526 E. Bruceton Road, Pleasant Hills.
The information will focus on Jefferson Hills, West Mifflin, Clairton, Dravosburg and Duquesne.

A day of "prayer for the healing" of people with HIV and AIDS will be held Saturday at Zion Baptist Church.
The event, called "The Balm in Gilead," begins at 11 a.m. at the church at 1300 Locust St., a spokeswoman said.

Students from area schools were recognized for their citizenship and scholarship this month by the Queen Alliquippa Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Spokeswoman Sharon Wallhausen said the local chapter of the DAR, founded in McKeesport in 1911, recently reinstituted its Good Citizen Award program. This year's winner is Owen Meilander (above right), a senior at Elizabeth Forward High School, shown with Maria Ferguson, regent of the Queen Alliquippa Chapter.
Meilander was recognized during a meeting at Norwin Public Library. His name will be submitted to the DAR's Pennsylvania State Competition, Wallhausen said.
Other finalists, who were nominated by their schools for the award, included Julia Conway, Gateway High School; Dana Ewing, Norwin High School; Kayley Bayne, Franklin Regional High School; Ashley Sandella, Serra Catholic High School; and Samuel Wilshire, Redeemer Lutheran School.

The region's "fascinating women" will be the topic of a special Women's History Month program at the McKeesport Regional History & Heritage Center.
"Fascinating McKeesport Women" will highlight the work of women who left their mark on the community in a variety of fields, including journalism, aviation and philanthropy, as well as those who influenced social and political movements or broke barriers.
The program will be presented at 2 p.m. March 24 by local historian Ellen Vasey Show, a spokeswoman said.
