Mon Valley residents who need help filing their income taxes may be eligible for one of several free tax clinics being provided around the district.
The clinics are being held in McKeesport, Duquesne, Braddock, Clairton, Homestead, Turtle Creek and Elizabeth beginning Jan. 27, said Stephanie Eson of Human Services Center Corp. in Turtle Creek.
The clinics are being sponsored in part by the United Way of Southwestern Pennsylvania, the Human Services Center and other agencies.
Although the clinics are free, appointments must be scheduled in advance by calling 2-1-1, Eson said. To be eligible, taxpayers must have had a 2017 income of $25,000 or less if filing as an individual, or a household income of $45,000 or less.

Five people were honored this month by McKeesport Mayor Michael Cherepko and city council for living the "McKeesport Message."
At this month's city council meeting, proclamations were presented to George Mushalko for living the value of "respect," to Carlinos Acie for "hope," and to Pat Harris and Cheryl Myers Cotter for "love."
Also honored, for the value of "dignity," was Melissa Staley, who could not be present.
The "Living the Message" awards are presented quarterly by a subgroup of Cherepko's Select Committee on Crime and Violence.

Mon Yough Chorale will hold an open house for prospective members from 7 to 9 p.m. Jan. 21 at Sampson's Mills Presbyterian Church, 1665 Lincoln Way, White Oak, a spokeswoman said.
Anyone who enjoys choral singing is invited to attend, including former and current high school and college choir or chorus members, church choir members who want to branch out in the type of music they sing, and former and current music teachers, she said.

It's only the fifth day of Christmas, but if your true love says your Christmas tree is losing its needles and becoming less than attractive, you may be looking for a place to recycle it already.
McKeesport and Allegheny County both have solutions.
City residents may drop off natural Christmas trees --- not artificial ones --- behind the Number 2 fire station in Renziehausen Park, said a spokeswoman for Mayor Michael Cherepko.
The trees must be stripped of any lights and decorations. The old trees are ground up for mulch and used in city parks and playgrounds, the spokeswoman said.

The developer of a proposed luxury hotel in the former Westinghouse Air Brake Co. "castle" in Wilmerding will receive $1 million in state assistance toward the rehabilitation of the site.
The grant, from the state's Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program, was announced Thursday by state Sens. Jim Brewster of McKeesport and Joe Markosek of Monroeville.
“The repurposing of the Westinghouse Castle is a signature project that will generate local economic activity and create jobs," Brewster said in a prepared statement.
Empty since 2009, the so-called "castle" on a clearing near the corner of Marguerite Avenue and Bluff Street was built in 1896 on the site of the previous WABCO offices, which were destroyed by fire.

Allegheny County Health Department has issued a warning to residents of the Wilmerding area after a cat suffering from rabies was found in the 400 block of Orient Avenue.
“We strongly urge all residents to avoid any kind of contact with a wild or stray animal, particularly those in Wilmerding, where the rabid cat was found,” Dr. Karen Hacker, director of the health department, said in a statement. “If any animal appears to be acting strange or becomes threatening, residents should notify their local animal control service, the police or the Pennsylvania Game Commission immediately.”
A woman who was scratched by the cat has been referred for treatment, Hacker said. The cat also was exposed to other animals, including pets, in the Wilmerding area.

Members of the "Mad Hatters," a group of knitting enthusiasts that meets at Carnegie Library of McKeesport, visited the city's Kane Regional Center on Monday to share more than 100 pairs of handmade leg warmers with residents.
The group also read a holiday story to residents and served refreshments.
The hatters meet Thursdays and took their name from the hats they knit for chemotherapy patients who have lost their hair.

Four West Mifflin students each received top honors from All-American Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 914 Intrepid West Mifflin for this year’s Voice of Democracy and Patriot’s Pen contests.
The winners were accepted from more than three dozen entries that gave the local scholars a chance to earn some of the $2 million in national educational incentives awarded annually through the VFW.
Earning the nod for this year’s VOD competition are Reagan Rubright, Kada Jackel and Dylan Ruffing from West Mifflin Area High School.
Nicholas Kosuda from the West Mifflin Area Middle School was awarded the top slot for the post’s Patriot’s Pen scholarship.

Free tax preparation services are being offered to Duquesne residents who qualify, beginning next month, Mayor Phil Krivacek said. The service is sponsored by United Way.
A workshop to help residents prepare their taxes is slated for Jan. 16 through April 17, he said.
Beginning Jan. 10, appointments can be scheduled for Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. by calling 2-1-1.
Additionally, a free Duquesne tax clinic will assist residents in filing their 2017 taxes. Those with a total household income of up to $45,000 or an individual income of $25,000 are encouraged to take advantage of the service from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. either Feb. 23 or March 23, Krivacek said.
Contact United Way at 2-1-1 for an appointment.
