The East Allegheny School Board has voted not to renew the contract of district Superintendent Alan Johnson.
At this month’s meeting, the board voted 5-4 not to rescind a previous motion to let the contract expire.
Voting against contract renewal were School Directors Merle Pusey, Robert Trout, Cortney Verner, George Yusk and Dan Ziober.

A company that promises to help school districts control costs by reducing the amount of energy they consume made its pitch this week to the East Allegheny School Board.
At this month’s committee meeting, representatives of American Building Maintenance said engineering upgrades and other improvements could stretch the school district's budget further.
ABM said that an engineering walkthrough of East Allegheny High School and Logan Elementary School saw aging equipment that the school district could upgrade or replace to provide energy savings that will, in turn, offset the costs of upgrades, replacements and repairs.
For example, their recommendations included connecting time controls to exhaust fans in the school buildings and lighting, especially for lighting in the stadium.

No dangerous levels of mold or other contaminants were detected after a water-line broke at East Allegheny Junior-Senior High School, the district’s superintendent told the school board this month.
Sub-zero temperatures over the winter break caused a pipe to break on the second floor, causing significant damage to the second-floor science wing.
School Superintendent Alan Johnson said that after consulting with the district’s environmental and disaster recovery experts, there were no reports of dangerous mold levels or other contaminants.
Environmental specialists were required to conduct additional testing for other toxins for another week, he said, before students could resume in-person classes.

Changes coming to the regional trail network could make it easier than ever for Mon-Yough area bicyclists to reach destinations in Monroeville and Westmoreland County.
Currently in the works are plans to extend the current Pittsburgh-to-Maryland trail — the Great Allegheny Passage, or GAP trail — deeper into local communities. One such plan — the Turtle Creek Connector project — would extend the Westmoreland Heritage Trail through Turtle Creek and North Versailles Twp. to meet the GAP, which serves McKeesport, Duquesne and Homestead.
Once a bustling network of railways akin to the region’s industrial history, these converted trails have seen new life in the past few decades and continue to develop with innovative community visions.

Freezing temperatures and high winds over the Christmas weekend caused a water pipe in a sink on the second floor of East Allegheny High School to rupture and cause flooding, the district announced.
According to a letter written and posted on the school district’s website by the Superintendent of Schools, Alan Johnson, the water damage was quite significant, and affected the second-floor science wing and the rooms below on the first floor and basement levels.
As a result of continued cleanup and testing to ensure the building is safe, seventh through 12th graders attending the junior-senior high school will learn remotely this week through Jan. 6.
Logan Elementary students will resume classes in person as usual.

North Versailles Twp. has announced winners of the holiday light contest for 2022.
Township Commissioner Tracy Yusko said this year’s winners are:
• Thomas residence at 785 Angeline Dr. won Best Children’s Theme.
• Procacina residence at 206 Taylor St. won the Traditionally Elegant category.
• Clark Griswold award went to the Nichol residence at 302 Lincoln Ave.
Each of those homes won a $50 gift card for Home Depot.
The Connelly residence at 515 Cedarhurst Dr. won the Best Overall category and was awarded a $100 gift card for Home Depot.

There will be no local property tax increase for North Versailles Twp. residents in 2023 — but sewerage rates will be increasing slightly.
Commissioners this month approved next year’s $8 million spending plan with a property tax rate of 7.25 mills and a fire-tax of 0.50 mills. The fire tax helps fund buildings, vehicles, equipment and operations of the township’s volunteer fire companies and also helps pay for the training of fire personnel.
The 2023 budget is slightly less — about 1 percent — than the 2022 budget. (PDF download)
The commissioners also approved an increased budget of $4.68 million for the North Versailles Twp. Sanitary Authority. Sewerage rates will increase by $1.50 per 1,000 gallons of water used.

North Versailles Twp. will hold a Christmas party for children from 1 to 3 p.m. Dec. 10, said township Commissioner Tracy Yusko.

North Versailles Twp. will take over the former Park Terrace School property from East Allegheny School District.
At this month’s meeting, the commissioners unanimously accepted the donation of the lot. Township officials said the plans are to use the property for recreational purposes.
Located at 224 James St., Park Terrace School was dedicated to seventh and eighth grades between 1968 and 1982. The facility closed before the 1982-83 school year and both grades were consolidated at the junior-senior high school. The building was eventually torn down, leaving a vacant lot owned by the school district.

Serra Catholic’s Eagles will take on the Washington High School Prexies in the first round of the WPIAL playoffs tonight at the Norwin High School stadium.
The 7-3 Eagles are coming off of a 28-0 loss last week to the Steel Valley Ironmen (9-0). Tonight’s game is a rematch of the third game of the season, when Serra Catholic defeated Wash High (6-4) in a very close game, 35-34.
“It is always difficult to beat a team twice,” said Michael Betler, assistant head coach and offensive coordinator at Serra Catholic. “They have the added motivation of beating us since we won the last game. We have some film on them from last time, so we can see what they did against us, but I am sure they will make adjustments, just like we will.”
In other matchups of local interest, the 9-1 McKeesport Area Tigers were defeated by (7-3) Thomas Jefferson High School on Oct. 28 by a score of 20-10. McKeesport (5-1 in conference play) will have a home playoff game in the first round of the AAAA WPIAL football playoffs, and are hosting (6-4) Mars High School at 7 p.m.
