Children in White Oak now have some new playground equipment they can use at Heritage Hill Park and, if all goes as planned, next spring, adults in the borough will have some new recreational opportunities as well.

At Monday’s meeting, Borough Engineer Kenneth Hillman told council that Snider Recreation Inc. has completed the installation of playground equipment as Phase One of the renovation of the park’s playground. Beneath the equipment for two- through five-year-olds, the company installed pour-in-place rubber and beneath the equipment for five- to 12-year-olds, it installed ground-up mulch, Hillman said.

The designs for a parking lot and a walking trail which are Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant and two pickleball courts are complete and ready to go out for bid, Hillman said. He said the pickleball courts will be adjacent to the playground in a space which now has a basketball court and racquetball court.

A White Oak bakery has relocated, but patrons don’t have to worry about finding it: it simply moved across the street.

Patti’s Pasticceria, which had been at 1502 Lincoln Way since 2012, has relocated directly across the street to 1501 Lincoln Way, which years ago was the site of Feig’s Bakery.

It’s a homecoming of sorts for Patti Fiasco, founder and namesake of Patti’s Pasticceria. She worked at Feig’s, starting at the counter as a teenager, before moving to the back room to learn more of the trade.

“I always loved to bake,” Fiasco said. “They taught me how to decorate (cakes) here.”

Fiasco remained at Feig’s until she became pregnant with her son, Andrew Macey, then, as she raised her family, continued to bake and sell her baked goods from her home for the next 20 to 25 years.

Zach Werner of McKeesport was ready for a challenge when White Oak Councilwoman Julie Opferman contacted leaders of Boy Scout Troop 1640 and made a request for the troop to be more involved with the community.

Troop 1640 is attached to Saint Angela Merici Church in White Oak. Werner was getting ready to try to reach Eagle Scout — something only 6 percent of all Boy Scouts achieve — and he began to brainstorm ideas to help the borough.

“Zach joined the Cub Scouts when he was 5 years old and transitioned into Boy Scouts when he was 11,” his mother Danielle Werner said. “He’s been a member ever since.”

Future of Angora Gardens Remains Unclear

June 17, 2023 |

By Elizabeth Laughlin | Posted in: White Oak News

More than a month after an announcement that Angora Gardens in White Oak will close on July 31, the future of the facility and its programs remains unclear.

In an email to supporters of the facility, UPMC announced in May that Angora Gardens — which provides community health and wellness programming, including for people with disabilities and mental health challenges — will be closing due to “steadily declining” funding and will be turned over to the Allegheny County Parks Department.

White Oak Mayor Ina Jean Marton expressed her disappointment in the closure.

“Angora Gardens is an asset to White Oak,” she said. “They do everything they can.”
