After 76 years in the blooming business, the Breitinger family is hanging up its pruning shears.
On Wednesday, Breitinger’s Flowers in White Oak announced plans to wind down operations next month. The last day of business will be June 25, said Bernadette Breitinger, wife of Russ Breitinger, whose father founded the business in 1946.
The first store — a one-room, one-person shop — was located on Versailles Avenue in McKeesport. Russ Breitinger took over the business, now located on Cool Springs Road at Route 48, in 1979.
“Our daughters and their families both live out-of-state, and we’d like to be freer to visit with our grandchildren,” Bernadette Breitinger said in a press release. “When you own a business, it actually owns you, and these 65-year-olds are worn out.”

Coulterville Road in White Oak will be closed at Lincoln Way beginning Tuesday (May 3) so that crews can replace a bridge, the Allegheny County Department of Public Works announced.
The closure begins at 9 a.m., a spokesman said, and is scheduled to continue through October. It will affect only a short stretch of the road near Lincoln Way Supply.
Crews are replacing a bridge over Long Run and also paving and installing new guide rail and signage, the county said. The $949,777 project will be done by Pugliano Construction Co., Inc., of Plum.
The posted detour includes Lincoln Way, Maus Drive, Clay Pike, Robbins Station Road and Ridge Road.

The White Oak Planning Commission has approved a lot consolidation for the building of a Sonic restaurant, White Oak council announced Monday.
Council Member Joelle Harbert, who chairs the planning and zoning committee, said the Sonic Drive-In will be located at 1160 Long Run Road in White Oak.
In other business, council outlined several upcoming recreational events for the spring and summer.

Street paving and storm sewer repairs should be finished by mid to late May, White Oak council announced at Monday’s workshop meeting.
Borough engineer Ken Hillman provided updates on the borough’s ongoing infrastructure projects.
“The street paving and storm sewer projects are 65 percent done – should be finished by mid to late May,” Hillman said. “We will also reapply for grants for our streambank stabilization project and Heritage Hill Park.”
In related news, solicitor Pat McGrail announced that the status of the potential Sonic restaurant on Long Run Road depends on the approval of PennDOT.

White Oak will hold several community events this upcoming spring, members of council announced at Monday’s meeting.
Health and Environment chair Loree Scharritter announced several upcoming events the community can participate in.
“Borough Clean-Up Day has been scheduled for April 30, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Heritage Hill Pavilion. The Electronics and Household Hazardous Waste Recycling Collection drop off will be May 3 from 3 to 7 p.m. at the borough building,” Scharritter said.

Roofing is under way at the Borough Maintenance Garage, members of the White Oak Council announced at Monday’s workshop meeting.
“It will probably take two weeks to get done, depending on the weather,” Borough Manager John Palyo said. “Street paving and inlet repairs are underway.”
Palyo also announced that the lowest bid for the 2022 paving project was from Tresco Concrete Products, and the equipment for the new Cool Spring Road traffic signal is scheduled to arrive in mid-May.

A contractor on Wednesday will begin the process of clearing away a landslide that has closed Lincoln Way in White Oak since last week.
“We expect that work will continue into next week,” said Steve Cowan, district spokesman for the state Department of Transportation.
PennDOT will meet back at the site this Friday to review the progress and evaluate the condition of the road, he said.

White Oak’s 2022 paving project will go out to bid in mid-March, members of council announced at Monday’s meeting.
Borough engineer Ken Hillman provided updates on the borough’s ongoing infrastructure projects.
“The paving project is out to bid — the bids are due March 11,” Hillman said. “We’re also halfway done replacing the inlets on Fawcett Avenue.”
On a related note, Mayor Ina Jean Marton announced that White Oak and McKeesport Area School District will discuss conducting a traffic study around the Francis McClure school in mid-March.
“We’re meeting in mid-March to discuss having a traffic study conducted around Francis McClure for a school zone,” Marton said.

Borough engineer Ken Hillman provided updates on the construction projects planned for this spring.
“Work on inlets started last week, and our 2022 paving project is going out to bid in March. Maintenance garage roofing will start in the spring,” Hillman said.

A White Oak man died Tuesday night after being hit by a car on Route 48, police said, and the driver of the car that struck him did not stop.
Craig Peden, 81, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Allegheny County police said Peden was walking along Jacks Run Road just north of the entrance to White Oak Park when the collision occurred just before 7:30 p.m.
