McKeesport First Steps and other area agencies will partner to hold the sixth annual "Spring Around Storytime" at 5 p.m. April 4 at Jacob Woll Pavilion, Renziehausen Park.
A spokeswoman said the event is intended for children ages 2 to 8. There will be six activity stations, community information and light snacks provided. Each child will receive a free story book and can listen to stories being read.
Participating agencies include Carnegie Library of McKeesport, McKeesport Area School District, McKeesport Head Start, McKeesport Family Center, Clairton Family Center, Duquesne Family Center and the Mon River Fleet Lions Club.

A Duquesne man has been indicted by a federal grand jury after prosecutors said he was caught with quantities of heroin and so-called "designer drugs" related to the tranquilizer fentanyl.
Marquis Brown, 29, also is charged with violating federal firearms laws, U.S. Attorney Scott W. Brady said in a prepared release.
Brown is currently being held in Allegheny County Jail in lieu of $15,000 bond after being arrested Monday by Duquesne police on charges of possession of controlled substances with intent to deliver, tampering with evidence and resisting arrest.

Rainy weather hasn't deterred construction crews from beginning work on a pothole-strewn section of Route 837 near Kennywood Park.
And more work is planned on Route 837 near the McKeesport-Duquesne Bridge, with a ramp expected to close in April.
Steve Cowan, district spokesman for the state Department of Transportation, said Gulisek Construction of Mt. Pleasant Twp., Westmoreland County, was awarded a $7.08 million contract to repair concrete, replacing curbs, and upgrading signage, traffic signals and drainage.
Lane restrictions began on Monday between North Second Street in Duquesne and Hoffman Boulevard in West Mifflin. The work will eventually continue from Hoffman Boulevard to the Rankin Bridge in Whitaker.
The repairs were planned before the 2.5-mile stretch of Route 837 sprouted a bumper crop of deep potholes, but Cowan said area roads took a beating this winter.

Mon Valley residents joined a crowd estimated at more than 30,000 who took to the streets of downtown Pittsburgh on Saturday to protest gun violence.
The rally was one of dozens held Saturday in cities across the United States --- one source says as many as 450 events were held --- under the banner "March for Our Lives," and organized in the wake of a mass shooting at a high school in Parkland, Fla., in which 17 people died and another 17 were injured.
All 50 states hosted at least one March for Our Lives rally, with at least 1.2 million people believed to have participated nationwide. A March for Our Lives rally in Washington, D.C., attracted upwards of 200,000 people, according to crowd estimates made from digital photos.
Tube City Almanac correspondent Vickie Babyak attended the Pittsburgh event with a friend from the Mon Valley. "Both of us work with students and have children --- and I have grandchildren," she says. "We are concerned with the violence and the lockdown drills schools put students through because of mass shootings."

Allegheny County will provide an additional $250,000 in Community Development Block Grant funding to the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, officials announced Thursday.
The one-time funding will make items such as fresh meat, fish and dairy products available to food pantry clients --- items that are not usually purchased for distribution due to their cost, a spokeswoman said.
Lisa Scales, president and CEO of the Duquesne-based charity, was joined by state Rep. Austin Davis, Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald and state Sen. Jim Brewster for the announcement.
CDBG funds are administered to counties through the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development.
“This is the kind of thing the CDBG program is intended to do --- help improve the quality of life and economic prospects of economically distressed households and neighborhoods in Allegheny County and across the country,” U.S. Rep. Mike Doyle said in a prepared statement.

Around 200 local children are expected to attend White Oak’s annual Easter celebration.
Youth will be split up according to age for the Easter egg hunt, slated for 10 a.m. March 31 at the pavilion at Heritage Hill Park. Goody bags with vouchers for Texas Road House children’s meals will be gifted to all who participate.
In other borough news, Councilman Lou Bender reported at this week's meeting that a borough cleanup day has been scheduled for 10 a.m. April 28. Volunteers who wish to participate should report to Heritage Hill Park at 9:30 a.m.
A rabies clinic in partnership with White Oak Animal Safe Haven is scheduled for 12 noon to 3 p.m. May 19 at the Public Works garage at the municipal building on Lincoln Way. Resident rate is $5 and proof of residency is required. Non-resident rate is $10.

A spring craft show will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at White Oak Volunteer Fire Co. No. 1, 1130 California Ave., a spokeswoman said.
More than 50 vendors are scheduled to participate, including dealers for Tupperware, Lularoe, Thirty-One, Pampered Chef, Tastefully Simple, Younique and many other companies.
Other vendors scheduled to participate include MB Letters, Creative Creations by Carol B., Kara's 100 Percent Soy Candles and Melts, Jordan Grace Co., Whaley's Wood Working, Cold Nose Bakery and The Chosen Wand.

White Oak council and residents are worried about vacant and blighted properties in the borough.
Before Monday's council meeting, a public hearing was held on whether to proceed with the demolition of a home on State Street that burned in December. Two people died in the fire.
Brian Dinkfelt, code enforcement officer, said that the property was uninhabitable and a hazard. Borough officials said the home was not insured.
Borough Solicitor Krisha DiMascio said White Oak will attempt to recoup the cost of demolition.

McKeesport Area School District will hold a lockdown drill for all of its buildings on Tuesday morning to practice security protocols in the event of an emergency.
Parents are being encouraged to talk to their children before the event to avoid kids being alarmed or panicked, said Mark Holtzman Jr., district superintendent.
The drill was prompted in part by the Feb. 14 shooting at a high school in Parkland, Fla., in which 17 people were killed and another 17 wounded, but McKeesport Area officials have "always been concerned about school security," Holtzman said.

Duquesne's mayor and city council have established eight committees to provide advice about municipal operations, and they're asking for representatives from each of the city's three wards to participate.
“We decided to initiate these committees so that we can function better as a community,” Mayor Nickole Nesby said. “We’re aiming to change the whole outlook of the city of Duquesne. We want people to feel safe here and be proud of their community.”
In addition, council has established a Civilian Police Review Board, to be overseen by Councilman John Guyer. The board will investigate citizen complaints about any improper police conduct, Nesby said.
