Duquesne City Councilman Aaron Adams defeated two challengers to capture the Democratic nomination for Allegheny County Council District 9.
According to complete but unofficial returns from the Allegheny County Elections Division, Adams had 5,401 votes (54.8 percent) versus 2,845 votes (29 percent) for Kellianne Frketic of Elizabeth Twp. and 1,472 votes (15 percent) for Dylan Altemara of Elizabeth Twp.
There were 148 write-in votes. The district includes Dravosburg, Duquesne, Elizabeth, Elizabeth Twp., Forward Twp., Glassport, Liberty, McKeesport, Munhall, Port Vue, South Versailles Twp., Versailles, West Elizabeth, West Mifflin, Whitaker and White Oak.
A mechanical engineer by profession, Adams is the son of Duquesne’s Mayor R. Scott Adams and the grandson of former police Chief Richard “Lefty” Adams.
On Tuesday, Adams also won renomination to his Duquesne City Council seat. If he is elected to both in November, he will have to decline one of the positions. County code and state law forbids him to hold both jobs simultaneously.
The District 9 seat has long been held by Bob Macey of West Mifflin, who is retiring.
Adams was endorsed by the Allegheny County Democratic Committee. It was nearly a clean sweep for Adams throughout District 9, except for several wards in Frketic’s home of Elizabeth Twp., where she tied or received more votes than Adams.
Frketic is an inventory control coordinator for the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank. Altemara is an educator at Community College of Beaver County and vice-chair of the Membership Committee for the Young Democrats.
Although there was no official Republican candidate filed, Patrick Provins, 52, of Elizabeth Twp., who works as a paramedic in the Mon Valley, waged a late write-in campaign.
Provins would need 250 write-in votes for the Republican nomination in order to qualify for the Nov. 4 general election.
